This section discusses the following topics :
Medicine is a regulated patient-focused health profession dedicated to the health and well-being of their patients. Physicians study, diagnose and treat a wide variety of injuries and illnesses.
Careers in Medicine can range based on the specialty the professional has chosen.
Physicians assess patients through an interview and physical examination. They can also order testing to investigate the patient’s problem further. Upon diagnosis of the injury or illness, physicians suggest treatment in form of medication, surgery, or other interventions. Physicians are able to perform and assess specialized illnesses based on their area of specialty.
Physicians can work in a variety of settings to provide services to their patients:
- Family Health Teams
- Hospitals
- Walk-in Clinics
- Private Practices
- Universities
- Long-Term Care Facilities
Medicine is offered as a graduate program in Canada. Completion of a Baccalaureate degree is required before entrance to the 3-4 year accredited medical program. After graduation, 2-7 years of post-graduate training is required, and varies upon the specialty in which the physician will practice. To obtain a license as a practising physician, physicians must pass a licensing exam through the Medical Council of Canada.
All physicians must be a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada. Registration is also required provincially through the regulator college of physicians for that province. In Ontario, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is the licensing body.
